"To me being part of our community is having the opportunity to help others, and in doing so, making a difference!"
Mark's dedication to public service is shown by his extensive volunteerism and community service.
"At a very young age, I had the opportunity to learn, from my own family that we all have a responsibility to give back, and to also pay it forward. It is true that one person really can make a difference, and that one's participation will serve as a significant contribution to building a better community."
Mark is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and pitch in.
When flood waters devastated parts of his district, Mark helped with sandbagging efforts. He then worked with community leaders to fast track the approval of the Duck Creek Wash improvements in the southeast area.
When families in a neighborhood were evacuated from their homes during a bomb scare, Mark brought food, water, candy, and games for the kids in the shelter.

In two separate instances, while out on the campaign trail, Mark ran into family's in which their child had not come home. "We had a missing child in our neighborhood and time was of the essence." Mark rounded up his campaign volunteers and, in teams of two, started searching the area. These stories ended on a positive note as both children were found, and one little girl was actually located by Mark and his team!
Another example out of many is his never ending commitment to helping our neighborhood fight graffiti. So you would not be surprised to witness, as so many of you already have over the years, Mark out with a paint brush or a spray can covering it up. The taggers are not fans of Mark, because of his participation in individual and group graffiti clean up projects along with desert clean up projects. Because of his level of commitment our community is better served by his leadership.
Mark is a hands-on Assemblyman: he is your Neighbor, your Friend, and your Concerned Citizen. His level of care and concern for our community keeps him approachable, and shows that most importantly he is there for you everyday.

| Service in Action: |
In 1994, Mark served on the Whitney Library Building Committee. Please come and visit this cornerstone of the Whitney Community. |
Mark was instrumental in securing Cortney Middle School for Assembly District 18 - at the time, the first middle school in the district. |
Mark spent over a decade working on the Boulder Highway Beautification Project. What a difference this has made for an older part of Las Vegas. |
|
A Champion of Soundwalls along I-515 also known as "US 95". For years the southeast area of Las Vegas did not have noise reducation barriers/sound walls. |
|
Mark along with the Southeast Valley Coalition of Concerned Citizens worked very hard to prevent a 1,000 bed JAIL from being constructed in the SE area of Las Vegas within walking distance from homes, schools and parks. This was so offensive to area residence that Mark organized "walks" and went door to door collecting thousands of signatures against this proposed site and attended numerous community meetings expressing our opposition. In the end the jail was built in an appropriate site out of harms way! |
|
When the voters in 1998 approved a 1/4 cents sales tax to improve the reliability of the LV Valley water delivery system, improve the quality of the Valley's water, and to provide additional water and wastewater (sewer) capacity to meet customer demands, Mark placed into law during the 1999 legislative session that a portion of the sales tax would be used for odor control. For the tens of thousands of Senate District 7 residents that reside within a few miles of not one but three wastewater facilities they will remember how far behind the curve our community was with controlling the odors. Millions of dollars has now be allocated and spent for State of the Art equipment. Mark was the only elected official that stood up for our quality of life as taxpayers in the SE Area. |
